‘Robots Write But so do I’

Florence loves writing and is eager to participate in a story market where she can showcase her favourite self-published book.When no one comes to the market, she is told that there is no point writing because robots can. Florence is sad and mad until she hears some whispers in the forest. Who could it be? Will Florence write again?

‘Robots Write But so do I’ is a 500 word rhyming story which aims to inspire our budding authors to keep writing, despite the robots.

This is a perfect resource for teachers, homeschool families and parents of children with an interest in creative writing or books (or anything creative!).

Robots do cool stuff but we don’t want them to stop our children finding joy in creative writing.

Comprehension Questions

Literal:

  • What was unique about Florence’s outfit?

  • Florence found a poster on the ground. What did it say?

  • How did her story begin?

  • What kind of bunting did she have on display at the market?

  • Who did she meet in the forest?

  • Why did she feel disappointed at the end of the market?

Inferential:

  • How would you describe Florence’s personality?

  • How did she feel when she learnt about the robots who write, compared to when she saw the crowd in the forest?

  • The author said, Florence’s movements were ‘clunky and slow’ when she stopped writing. How do you think she felt at this time?

  • What were the reactions of the characters in the forest?

Other ideas:

  • Make a story map of the events that happened using words and drawings

  • Draw a detailed picture of Florence and annotate her features and belongings. Also list character traits

  • Use a highlighter and identify different language features. (eg. rhyming words, alliteration, personification, metaphors)

  • Use the bits of Florence’s story that were mentioned to write your own narrative.

  • Create an advertisement for a ‘Story Market’ with a list of what makes a good narrative! (Interesting vocab, character, plot etc.)

  • Chop up the paragraphs and have students put it back together. (A great sequencing activity!)
